The Arkansas Water Plan

January 23, 2012

The Arkansas Water Plan is a “comprehensive program for the orderly development and management of the state’s water and related land resources.” It is intended by the Legislature to be “the state policy for the development of water and related land resources in this state.” Arkansas Code § 15-22-503.

In 2011, the General Assembly appropriated money for a comprehensive update of the Plan, which was last revised in the 1980s. We expect this revision to be complete in the fall of 2014.

With the help of interested Arkansas citizens, organizations, and local governments, and with the best data and science available, we will work to develop water policy to ensure abundant, clean, and affordable water for our citizens and environment for decades to come.

Major steps in the revision include:

-Law and policy research and discussion

-Public water education and outreach

-Technical studies:

  • Current supply and quality
  • Future supply and quality
  • Current infrastructure status
  • Future infrastructure needs
